Pershing, Benson & Marshall
This photo was taken on Decoration Day(now Memorial Day), May 30, 1924 at 10:30AM, on the occasion of the dedication of the Cenotaph in Armory Park. The picture shows, then General of the Army, General John "Blackjack" Pershing, prominent civic leader and President of the Board of Education, Robert D. Benson and then Lt. George C. Marshall(Pershing's Adjutant). This is a remarkable photo, in that it places the leaders of the United States of America's military, in both World Wars, in Passaic, New Jersey, on a given date and time. Pershing led the AEF in WWI and Marshall was Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in WWII. Marshall later went on to be Secretary of State under President Truman and was the author of the Marshall plan, an economic effort that rebuilt Western Europe after WWII.
The original photo is part of the collection of the Passaic Historical Commision (1969-1983). It was taken by Halupka and was a gift of Francis H. Hopkins in 1972.
