IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING

 REMOVAL OF DOG FECES

City of Passaic regulations require that dog owners clean-up after their dogs. If you are taking your dog for a walk and your dog defecates, you must immediately remove and properly dispose of the dog feces. You are also required to immediately remove dog feces on private property including but not limited to backyards.

In order to comply with this requirement, residents should:

  1. Carry plastic baggies when walking their dogs. The baggies can be used to remove and store the fecal matter for proper disposal later. Disposable gloves or napkins with a plastic bag can also be used.

  1. Any fecal matter removed must be disposed of in the general trash. To prevent fly breeding and excessive odors, fecal matter should be placed in closed plastic bags and stored in a covered waste receptacle that is inaccessible to insects until the time of garbage collection.

  1. If your dog is kept outside, you should routinely check your yard for dog feces. Immediately remove any dog wastes as described above.

  1. Thoroughly wash your hands after manually removing dog waste with warm water and soap. Make sure to vigorously rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds creating a thick lather. Thoroughly rinse your hands with clean water afterwards.

Dog waste is one of many small sources of pollution to streams and waterways. It is high in organic matter which kills fish and aquatic plant life. In addition to foul odors and fly breeding, dog waste can also serve as a source of harmful bacteria and parasites which can result in illness in humans.

Failing to clean-up after your dog can result in your being issued a summons to appear in Municipal Court. If found guilty, you may be subject to a fine of up to $2,000.00.

Please help keep Passaic clean and protect city

waterways by immediately removing dog waste!
