Accessible (Handicapped) Residential Parking

Residents who meet the eligibility criteria may apply for a designated accessible (handicapped) parking space near their residence. Approved applicants will receive a reserved space marked with a regulatory sign indicating that parking is restricted to vehicles displaying a valid New Jersey accessible parking license plate or placard.

The following documents must be submitted with your application. All documents must reflect the same residential address for which the parking space is being requested:

      · Valid New Jersey Driver's License

      · New Jersey Handicapped Person Identification Card

      · New Jersey Vehicle Registration

 

      All documents must be current and issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).

 

Qualifying Criteria:

  

  1. You are a person with a disability who owns or leases and operates a vehicle; -OR- You are the parent, legal guardian, or family member who resides full-time with a developmentally disabled child or adult and are responsible for their transportation.  
  2. You do not have a driveway, garage, carport, or other off-street space available.  
  3. If the residence does have a driveway or onff-street parking that is not accessible to the applicant, a letter from the property owner must be submitted with the application, stating the reason the applicant cannot use the space, so that the application can be evaluated.

 Application Review Process: 

1. Applications will be reviewed by the Division of Engineering and the City Administration Office, and   then      forwarded to the City Council.                                    

2. Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements will be notified in writing.

3. If your application is denied, you will automatically be placed on the City's Handicapped Parking waiting        list, which is organized by block and prioritized by the date of application.

       

Annual Renewal Requirements:


Upon approval by the City Council, accessible parking spaces are subject to annual renewal. To retain your space, you must submit:

 

       · A completed renewal form

       · Photocopies of your driver's license, vehicle registration, and accessible placard
         or license plate

       · A $50.00 annual fee (only applicable if you request a personalized license plate)

 

All renewal documentation must be submitted between December 26 and January 31 of each year. Failure to renew within this period may result in the removal of the designated parking space.
